Self-care isn't selfish, here's why the best parents and partners fill up their own cup first. As women, we tend to put everyone else's needs ahead of our own. Whether it be the needs of partners, friends or kids, it seems that we have some sort of in-built over-drive that pushes us to fuss over everything and everyone else and put our own needs second best.
It's pretty hard to give from an empty cup. But when your cup is overflowing, there's plenty to share around. Fill up your own cup first and then use all of that extra, overflowing love and energy to better serve those around you. Trying to juggle work, relationships, health and wellbeing can be downright exhausting. To be the best Mum/wife/daughter/bestie (whatever roles you wear) you have to be the best version of YOU. So here is your permission slip - go treat yourself, take a moment for you, and fill that cup to the brim.
Today's parents play so many roles - chef, cleaner, chauffeur, doctor, nurse, teacher. You name it and a parent has likely played that role at least once just in the last week. Am I right? Don't let exhaustion get the better of you, live a balanced life and recognise the importance of taking time-out for yourself.
When you take time for yourself you can handle stressful situations better, you can offer better advice and you can be fully present for those around you. When your child or partner need you, you're able to help them better with a clear mind and full cup.
Take small, simple steps each day to keep your cup nicely full. You don't need to book a week-long spa retreat and turn off your phone for 7 days straight. It's as simple as sitting in the sun for 5 minutes in the morning to drink your cuppa in peace or allowing yourself to go to bed half an hour earlier. Whatever it is that makes you feel good, do it and don't feel guilty about it. It's not beneficial to anyone around you if you're sitting on empty because then there's nothing left to give.
Tomorrow when you wake up - take a moment for yourself and remind yourself that it's okay to make YOU a priority. It's not selfish, it's actually so beneficial for you and everyone around you. The most bubbly, glowing Mummas and partners know how important their own wellbeing is. They fill up their own cup and then use all of the overflowing lovin' to handle tantrums, arguments and sticky situations. It's okay to invest in yourself first. This makes you happier, calmer and way more equipped to handle whatever your day throws at you. You don't want your kids to see a stressed-out, tired super-human. You want them to know the glowy, loved-filled Mumma that is in-fact human and can handle any obstacle much better by investing in themselves first. Be the example and you may just inspire everyone around you to lead healthier, happier lives with a little self-love.
Remember that you are important. Your health and wellbeing is just as important as everyone else's. You are a wonder woman, and the best wonder women of all, look after themselves first. That's what makes them so wonderous.
