Native to Indonesia, clove leaf essential oil is extracted from the dried flowers of Eugenia caryophyllus - an evergreen tree that grows up to 12 meters tall with bright green leaves and intensely red, nut-like flower buds. Known for its antiseptic properties, the steam distilled leaves and twigs can also produce clove essential oil.

Due to its counterirritant, antiseptic, and anesthetic properties, clove oil is often found in toothpaste, mouthwash, soaps, lotions, toiletries, perfumes, massage oils, and cosmetic products. It is commonly known to help against bad breath as well as treat tooth decay and cavities.

How to use Essential Oils


Add 2-4 drops of essential oil to your diffuser after having added water to the fill line. Some oils may require 4-8 drops to be added.


Essential oils should always be diluted before applying to the skin. Blend essential oil with coconut oil, almond oil or any other suitable carrier oil for massage.


Essential oils suitable for inhalation should be diluted by adding 1-2 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Place a towel over your head and the bowl of water. With your eyes closed, inhale the scent for up to 5 minutes at a time.

Other uses

You can add 3-5 drops of essential oil to a full bath of water, or onto a face washer placed in the bottom of your shower.

Rollerbottles are handy for ‘on the go’ applications – simply fill a rollerbottle with your preferred carrier oil and add some drops of your essential oil. You can also fit a rollerball top to an essential oil bottle rather than using a separate bottle – make sure to dilute your oil however. If that sounds like too much work, you can simply purchase ready made rollerbottles.

Safety Cautions

Essential oils are natural, but they are also concentrated. We recommend following basic safety precautions when using your oils:

  • Essential oils should not be ingested, unless it is under the guidance of a suitably qualified practitioner.

  • Do not use oils undiluted on the skin, unless the instructions permit otherwise. Many oils can cause irritation when placed directly on skin, particularly on sensitive areas such as the eyes or mouth. Some oils (particularly those in the citrus family) can cause photosensitivity if used prior to going out in the sun - please check instructions carefully.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your healthcare practitioner prior to using essential oils. As a general guideline, oils should be avoided for the first four months of pregnancy and never used undiluted. Some oils should be avoided during pregnancy: Bay, Basil, Cedar wood, Clary Sage, Comfrey, Cypress, Fennel, Ginger, Hyssop, Jasmine, Juniper, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Melissa, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sage & Thyme.

  • Children can be particularly affected by essential oils. Some oils should not be used in children under the age of 7, and specific dilution ratios are recommended depending on the essential oil and the age of the child. We recommend consulting an appropriate practitioner prior to using oils on children.
